September Meeting

The September meeting will return to the VFW in Leland and will start at 10:00am on Saturday Sep. 11th.  The Wrightsville Beach Activity Center wasn’t too bad, but it will be good to get back home.

The presenter is Barry Russell from Kannapolis, NC, near Charlotte.
Artist's Statement

For many years woodturning was about the wood and form, Today, woodturning as an art form has taken many directions. Work on the lathe easily lends itself to the creation of vessels, but the vessel is only the beginning. Many artists are moving the art away from the vessel and are creating sculpture on the lathe. Most of my work retains the vessel. I seek to use classic forms as a starting point. I use various techniques to transform the vessel to a new place and present it in a different context. I employ carving, sculpting, texturing, burning, and coloring to create a work product that has a visual and tactile impact on those who come in contact with it. I will continue to explore woodturning in my studio with an open and independent mind. I am inspired by those who came before me and those who are working today, but I will follow my own path and allow my work to evolve.

Presidents Message

Important AAW Update

Don’t forget to send in your ballot for Board of Director. Your ballot is in the August issue of the American Woodturner Journal. For some reason they are not doing on line voting this year. Be careful when you remove it from the magazine, because they will not accept copies, only the original.
One further note, one of the candidates, John Ellis, withdrew his name from consideration.

Congratulations Jack O'Connor

In case you haven't happened on it by now, Jacks work was featured in the AAW Journal “American Woodturner”. Jack did a piece for the “Silver Arts Show” earlier this year and won there. He then submitted it to the Journal and it was accepted for the Member Gallery section in the August issue.

Congratulations Jack

Chapter Challenge Project

As most of you should already know, the “Chapter Challenge Project” that was made for the AAW National Symposium this year, won BEST IN SHOW. The project will be on display at several locations in the near future including the Cameron Art Museum. The project team did a fantastic job, and should be congratulated.

Library Update

The library is now in place.  Dolan Brown and Charles Gore have gotten all of the books and DVD's into our new cabinet in the VFW.   This will make it possible for the library to be available to the members at all meetings whether the librarian is there or not. There have been several additions to the video collection recently.
