July Meeting

The insides out of turning.

For our July Demo, Charlie Wilkinson will demonstrate turned inside-out forms where several pieces of wood are grouped to make a spindle blank, turned then broken apart and reassembled with the previously turned surfaces on the inside to create spindle shapes that are open on the inside. The technique is applicable to many projects, including but by no means limited to candlesticks, weed pots and vases sculptural forms etc. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

There will be the usual show and tell where members can show off their latest achievements at the lathe. Also for those who attended the AAW National Convention and nabbed that special new tool, please bring it along and let us all envy your prize!!

Time permitting, I will also ask those who attended the AAW National Convention at Richmond to share their impressions.

The chapter challenge for July is to turn a natural edge form

Regular Meeting Location

The new meeting location seems to be working out well.  The lighting is good, the sound caries throught the room, and there is enough room for everyone.  It appears that we have found a new home.

The meetings are held on the second Saturday of each month at 1:00 and usually run until about 4:00pm.

A map to the VFW can be found below, and on this web site under the menu tab;   <Contact us/ About us>

Breaking News

We are pleased to announce WAWA's second day long demo.   On Saturday, October 18. 2008, we will present a day with Frank Penta from 10:00 to 4:00 at the VFW in Leland. Frank will demonstrate his signature multi-axis and three footed platters. During the demo, Frank will cover all important aspects from design, layout, tool selection, turning technique, to finishing the project, Frank will discuss coloring methods using dyes, inks and water based automotive acrylics on turnings to make them unique. He will show how coloring can be used to enhance turnings. Time permitting, Frank will talk about and show a number of tools that are easy and inexpensive to make. As Frank has stated: "I am a strong believer in the effective use of tools to make turning more fun, especially when you can turn with less energy and not have to worry about catches. Whenever I teach this is something that I stress. I also show my students how several tools can be easily made." Frank is a lively demonstrator, and experienced teacher who believes in not only demonstrating how to do a project, but in explaining why he is doing things the way that he does. You will come away from this demo with new insights into turning technique in general , not merely how one turner does a particular project. New to turning, or experienced, you will find Frank's presentation informative and entertaining. We expect to be able to keep costs for this demo in the $35 range, which will include lunch. So mark your calendars, keep the Third Saturday of October, 10/18/08 open and come to an informative and interesting demo. We would appreciate your letting us know if you are planning to attend, so we can ensure an adequate supply for lunch.

Regards,   Bradford J. Chaucer

Elvie Jackson Demo

Saturday March 15th WAWA had it’s first demonstration by an outside turner.  Elvie Jackson, from Raleigh came and demonstrated for us.  We had about 22 members and guest in attendance for that function. The cost for this function was a very reasonable $35.00 for this all day function and lunch was included. Anyone who missed it really missed an excellent demonstration.

Elvie demonstrated the turning of a Natural edge Hollow form, hollowed through a narrow opening.  His demonstration was on the designing, and production of a hollow form vessel, from wood selection, design consideration, mounting techniques, turning the outside of the form, hollowing and finishing the project.  Along the way he discussed the selection of tools and tool technique, alternate tool choices and alternate techniques.  This was an opportunity for attendees to see the creation and execution of a complete project outside of our usual monthly meeting time constraints.  Elvie also discussed and demonstrated sharpening of tools as part of his demonstration. After the first project was finished, he demonstrated turning a simple bowl.  He explained how he selected wood and prepared it for mounting on the lathe.  He showed how he reversed the wood remounted it for turning the bottom and prepared it for finishing.  Elvie has been turning since 1994 after training with Bill Johnson, a nationally respected N.C. turner. Elvie began his professional career as an Electrical Engineer working with Carolina Power and Light where a fellow employee piqued his interest in turning when he brought in an oak burl bowl.  In 1985 Elvie started a side business, Jackson's Tree Service. Elvie decided to devote his full time to turning and his Tree Service business in 1995.

Elvie is a member of the Wood Turner's Guild of N.C. and the AAW.  He has continued his growth as a turner through symposiums and club meetings.

WAWA Now 501(c)3 Orginazation

We had good news this month, we got a letter from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) approving WAWA as a 501(c) (3) Non Profit Orginazation.  This means that we will be able to apply for grants that are only avaliable to tax exempt orginazations.  Thanks to Bert Millette, our Treasurer, for all of his hard work toward making this happen.

Senior Games

Our demonstration at the Senior Center went off very well and we had good participation. We set up the display on Monday and the show/demo ran from Tuesday morning thru Friday noon. There were quite a few people in and out of the area and interested in what we were doing. We even picked up a couple of new members. All in all it was a big success.
